William Lawery, best known to his family and friends as, “Big Lswery,” was born n January 28, 1934, in Harlem, NY, to the late Thomas and Lucille McRae. He was the second eldest of seven siblings, who lovingly call him “Brother.”
William’s career was marked by dedication and service. He began his professional journey in the U.S. Army, serving as a soldier for 3 years.
After his military service, he joined the U.S. Postal Service, where he dedicated over 35 years of his life before retiring in 1989.
His colleagues knew him as a supportive and trustworthy friend, always ready to lend a hand or offer words of encouragement. His genuine desire to help others was a hallmark of his character.
Although William was abundantly kind and generous, he was best known for his unwavering love and devotion to his family. His true passion was his family, always offering guidance and a listening ear.
In 1975, William married his best friend and partner, Wilma Jones– Lawery. For over 53 years, William and Wilma went on life’s journey and were inseparable.

He leaves to cherish his legacy, five children, Cheryl Lawery, Patricia Lawery, Gorjis Jones, Terence Lawery, and William Lawery; two sisters, Mary Lawery and Lola Thomas; 15 grandchildren, including Melissa Lawery, Philip Lawery, Ladi'Sasha Jones, Emerald Jones, and Blake Lawery; 4 great grandchildren, JaNya Walker, Skylene Gardner, August Jones, and Mulan Jones, and another on the way; nieces and nephews who loved him dearly, including Paul, Sheri, and Yolanda Dail, and many others.
William’s life was a testament to the power of love and selflessness. He lived a full 90 years, each one filled with love, dedication, and a fierce spirit that protected those he held dear. His unwavering belief in standing up for what he believed in and advocating for his loved ones was a testament to his character. He will he remembered as a pillar of strength for his family, and his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
