He received his education in the public school system of Quitman County. At an early age, he became a member of St. James A.M.E. Church of Georgetown, Georgia. After relocating to Eufaula, he attended Thankful Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon.
Following the footsteps of his beloved grandfather, Johnnie L. Balkcom, James enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1973. He also became a member of Cross Road Masonic Lodge #190 and later served in the capacity of Worthy Patron. After returning home from the military, James obtained certifications in Automotive Technology in 1988 and Autobody & Fender Repair in 1990 from Sparks Technical College (now Wallace Community College). He was employed with Columbus Mills for a period of time. After 20 years of dedicated service to the City of Eufaula, James “professionally retired”, as only he could say.
James dedicated a lot of time to his family and friends, especially his children and grandchildren. In your time of need, he was a comforting presence. He was known as being a father figure to his nieces and nephews and a man of grace. He touched the lives of many and will truly be missed.
