Murray Dixon Obituary

Murray Earl Dixon, born on May 3, 1944, in Georgetown, Georgia, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2025. He was the beloved son of the late Albert and Alma (Proctor) Dixon. Murray was one of seven children and was preceded in death by his brothers, Cornel, Alvin, and Walter Charles, two sisters, Grace and Rubie, and two grand fur-babies, Paris Joy Clark and Spunky Cornelius Mustafa Dixon.

Murray attended Number 7 Elementary School and graduated from Kaigler Training School in Georgetown, GA 1964.

In 1957, at the age of 13, Murray met the love of his life, Inez Beatrice Willis. Their love story spanned more than six decades, and they were united in marriage on November 13, 1965, at St. Luke A.M.E. Church in Newark, NJ. And to this union, two daughters were born, Djwana Desiree and Tjwana Terese Dixon.

Murray accepted Christ at a young age at Union A.M.E. Church in Georgetown, GA, and remained a devoted man of faith. As a faithful member of St. Luke A.M.E. Church for over 50 years, he became the first male missionary, leaving a lasting impact through his dedication and service.

He proudly served in the military and was honorably discharged. After his service, he worked alongside his brothers at a local bakery and later at Fablok Mills in Providence, NJ. In 1973, he and his brothers Walter and Alvin became the proud owners of AM&W Auto, a Shell gas station in Elizabeth, NJ. They made history as the first Black owners of a Shell station in Elizabeth, a testament to their entrepreneurial spirit and hard work. Though Alvin later left the business, M&W Auto thrived until 2002, when Murray retired due to health reasons.

He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose generosity, faith, and strength left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He had a passion for street racing and was well-known for his love of drag racing at Englishtown Raceway. Alongside his brothers, he became a respected name in the local racing scene. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle, finding joy and freedom on the open road.

Murray’s legacy lives on through his devoted wife, Inez Beatrice Dixon; his cherished daughters, Djwana Desiree, and Tjwana Terese Dixon; his beloved granddaughters, Sarajoni Miyaja Clark and Je’ana Letrese Jones; and his adored great-grandfur baby, Bentley Charles Dixon. He is also lovingly remembered by his extended family, including his sister, Pattreen Washington (Berry); sisters-in-law, Elouise Keaton, Lillie Willis, Alma Willis, Ethel (John) Wims, Johnnie Mae Fick, Evangelist Dr. Lucy Willis, and Mary Alice Monds, Lilla Mae Dixon, Luz Dixon and Florence Newton Acquah; brothers-in-law, Willie James (Emma) Willis and William Dee Willis; his beloved aunt, Kathleen Miller; and his lifelong friend and “partner in crime,” Jethro Golden. He also leaves behind a host of friends, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
