Mamie Durr Vaughn, a devoted educator, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on December 21, 1936, in Abbeville, Alabama, she was the fourth child of the late Dan and Ida Durr.
Mamie was a lifelong and faithful member of St. John AME Church in Abbeville, Alabama, where she dedicated her time and faith to serving her community.
After graduating from Henry County Training School, she pursued higher education at Alabama State University, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and Library Science, followed by a Master’s Degree in Library Media.
Her passion for education led her to a distinguished career spanning over 30 years in the Henry County School System. Even after retiring from the State of Alabama, Mamie continued her dedication to shaping young minds, spending an additional nine years as an educator in the Clay County, Georgia School System.
Mamie was an esteemed member of the Alabama Education Association and a proud member of Alpha Pi Chi Sorority, Incorporated. She was known for her unwavering commitment to education, her kindness, and her nurturing spirit.
She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Heidi Vaughn; two brothers, Willie and Claude Durr; and one sister, Maudrie Hamilton.
Mamie leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband of 65 years, Herbert Vaughn; her loving son, Hadryan Vaughn (LaShondra); her dear brother, Robbie Durr (Diane) of Bedford Heights, Ohio; her cherished grandchildren, Chatesha, Harrison, and Carly; and her precious great-grandchildren, Chamar, Zaheem, and Heidi.
She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Johnson (Fort Gaines, GA), Cora Vaughn (Abbeville, AL), Bessie Durr (Cleveland, Ohio), Minnie Vaughn Johnson (Willowbrook, New Jersey), and Emma Malone Martin (Abbeville, Alabama); along with a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever treasure her memory.
Mamie’s legacy of love, faith, and dedication to education will continue to live on in the many lives she touched. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
