Katherine was born on September 29, 1933 to the parentage of the late Clarence Mauldin and Lillie Mae Herbert Mauldin in Asheville, NC. She was educated in the Buncombe County, NC school system and graduated from Stephen Lee High School.
At an early age she confessed in Christ and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Asheville, NC. Upon relocating to Fort Gaines, GA, she joined Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Gaines.
She attended Tuskegee Institute and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. She began her teaching career in Fort Gaines, GA at Speight High School in 1957. Katherine obtained her certification in Guidance and Counseling from Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA and her master’s degree from North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC.
On August 16, 1965 Katherine married her true love, Loyd Talmadge Lewis, of Georgetown, GA. To this union one son was born.
Katherine loved teaching and being a guidance counselor. After 38 years of dedicated service she retired in 1995. She and her travel buddy and former co-worker, Martha Jemmott, traveled the world visiting Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
During her retirement, she served on the Quitman County Board of Registrars, the Quitman County Library Board and served as its chairperson, started and chaired the Quitman County Arts Council and represented Quitman County on the CareConnect Board, serving as the Finance Committee chair and Interim Board Chair. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers group and the Tuskegee Alumni Club, Eufaula Chapter. Her church duties kept her busy at St. Stephen AME Church in Georgetown. She served as Church and Church School secretary, treasurer, Stewardess and choir member.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Loyd; son, Carvel; and grandson, Tristan, all of Georgetown, GA; and a host other sympathizing relatives and friends.
