Johnny Charles Cochran, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend, entered eternal rest on his 74th birthday, April 30, 2025. He was born April 30, 1951, to the late Eddie Bell Cochran and Sammie Cochran Sr. Johnny lived a life full of love, strength, resilience, and purpose.
Raised during a time of struggle and injustice, Johnny was the son of a sharecropper, born into an era when Black men were often called “boys” regardless of their strength, integrity, or wisdom. Despite the systemic barriers he faced, Johnny rose above the odds. He walked through life with dignity and determination, transforming adversity into purpose. He became not only a devoted husband and loving father, but also a proud CEO—founding 39 South and leading it with the same resilience and grit that shaped his early years.
He shared 51 beautiful years of marriage with his devoted wife, Mary Candis Cochran. Together, they built a strong and loving family.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Douglas Williams and Raymond Cochran.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Candis Cochran; two daughters, Susan Candis and Johnte’ Cochran; one son, Johnny (Letesha) Cochran Jr.; three sisters, Betty Cochran, Lizzie Shabazz, and Eddie Mae Cochran; one brother, Sammie Cochran Jr.; two aunts, Rebecca Thornton and Eva Richardson; one uncle, Ulysses Richardson; two sisters-in-law, Connie Richardson and Mariam Candis; three brothers-in-law, Willie Candis, Robert Candis, and Dennis Candis, each of whom he loved and respected deeply; he was a proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; and he had a heart big enough to raise a host of nieces and nephews as his own, offering them the same love, guidance, and protection he gave to his children.
A true pillar of strength, Johnny Charles Cochran’s life was a testament to perseverance, love, and legacy. From humble beginnings to becoming the head of his family and a leader in his community, his story is one of triumph, honor, and unshakable faith.
His legacy of family, faith, and perseverance will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
Rest in Peace, Johnny. Your legacy lives on in every life you touched.
