Evelyn Ford Jenkins was born June 9, 1937 to the late Albert and Rosie Ford in Georgetown, Ga. She was the fourth child of 10 children.
She attended St. Paul and Kaigler Training Schools. She played basketball during her time at Kaigler Training. She had a talent to sew and was known for being an amazing seamstress. She joined St. Paul A. M. E. Church at an early age and was involved in the church.
She was married at the age of seventeen to David Lee McElroy and later joined Berry Chapel Baptist Church. Later, Mrs. Evelyn became the Mother of the Church at Berry Chapel Baptist Church. Her favorite bible verses to reflect on was Job 5:17-27.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her sisters, Mrs. Bernice Duncombe, Lucille Jones, Louise Bussey, and Maple Bradford and brothers, Albert Jr. And Walter Ford.
She leaves behind her daughters Vernice Jackson of Eufaula, AL, Linda Sharon McElroy of Georgetown, GA, and Carolyn (Royzell) Wilson of Georgetown, GA; her grandchildren, Melvin Lamar Morgan (Etta) , David McElroy, Porchia Wilson, Trayvis Wilson (Shanrae), J.J. Billings, TaMonica Wilson, Tyenna Wilson, and NaLayja Smith; two sisters, Mrs. Lola Moore of West Palm Beach, FL and Rosa Walton of Eufaula AL; one brother, David Lee Ford of Georgetown, GA. There were many who called her momma and she had a host of nieces and nephews from various states. Amongst her many nieces and nephews, she was looked upon as a special aunt or even a mother figure for some. She was viewed as a mother and grandmother figure to many and will be missed dearly by many.
