Mother Clara H. Lewis was born on May 28, 1911 in Fort Gaines, GA to the parentage of the late James Harris and Bertha Doughty Harris.
She confessed in Christ at an early age and joined Emanuel AME Church in the Days Crossroads community of Clay County, GA. Clara was educated at the Chattahoochee Institute School in Fort Gaines, GA.
On June 2, 1934 she was united in holy matrimony to A.C. Lewis of Georgetown, GA. To this union, four children were born, three daughters and one son.
Clara was known for her laughter and love for her family. She was in constant communication with family members located around the country. Many of the younger family members referred to her as “Mrs. BellSouth” because of her telephone usage.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. A.C. Lewis, her son, Alfred, Jr., four grandchildren, Gwendolyn, Larry, Lamon and Darryl, Sr., a brother, Curtis, and a sister, Mandalia.
She lives to cherish her legacy of 109 years of life, three daughters, Thelma, Nancy and Geraldine; six grandchildren, Marilyn, Angela, Tammy, Audrey, Alfred III (Chisha) and Gregory, Sr.; 17 great grandchildren, Johnny, Kealan, Samary, Gregory, Jr., Timothy, Donta, Standra, Darryl, Jr., Shawn (Jackie), Jayson (Alisha), Charlie, Alexis, Joshua, Ryan, Aaron, Niya and Jordan; eight great, great grandchildren, London, Paris, Tony, Greg, III, Maradi, Elizabeth and two additional gems of joy; a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
