Bertha Mae Wallace: The angels called on Bertha as she slept peacefully on February 2, 2024, surrounded by family members in Alexandria, VA. She was born in Ft. Gaines, GA (Clay County), on May 30, 1928, as Bertha Mae Shorter. She accepted Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior, baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, returning to her roots and where she will be laid to rest.
She graduated from Speight High School in Fort Gaines, GA. Growing up, her nickname was Nute, and many called her Bert. It was during her younger years that you could find her at a fishing pond. She migrated to Hartford, CT in the late 1950s. She left Connecticut in the late 1980s and returned to her roots, only to relocate back to Hartford, CT, in 2010 as she matured into her senior years.
Bertha is predeceased by the love of her life, John Bishop Lewis; her oldest son, Benjamin Shorter; daughter, Elizabeth Miller; sons Johnny Bishop and Charles Wallace, aka Bay; and her first grandchild, Trina Wallace.
Bertha's legacy continues to live on through her daughters, Geraldine (Gerri), Sandra Louise (Big sister), Barbara Ann (Little sister), Cynthia Louise (Michael), and her only son, George Wallace. She also leaves to mourn her only sister, Gazzie Lee Granger of Hartford, CT and brother, Larry Granger of Bartow, FL. She had 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Lewis Mortuary in Fort Gaines, GA, 847 Martin Luther King Blvd., Ft. Gaines, GA 39851, Viewing will be held on February 16, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. and funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Interment immediately following at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
